I listened to this talk by Simon Sinek about the starting point for things to be the WHY. And started to think “why did I start ElectricianXchange?”
This came about as I was presenting to Melbourne Polytechnic to their electrical apprentices. And one of the electrical teachers - Robert Cook said - Ray what you’ve created is of value BUT if you want to resonate more go to the WHY.
As entrepreneurs it hard to crystallise that clearly in your own head.
But what Robert conveyed to me kept swirling in my head - WHY am I so passionate about ElectricianXchange? WHY have my wife & I sold our house & are supporting this through the equity from that?
After listening to this message again from Simon Sinek today I figured it out.
I’ve been disappointed with the hiring process and wanted to create something to counter that.
In the past; when I’ve submitted a resume, been unsuccessful and got no response. Or got a statement saying there was a better candidate. Or was told you were in the final two but got no real feedback. I was frustrated.
Then I started to reflect on my business in recruitment which I started (to find my work joy via running my own business) and thought to myself what was I doing as a recruiter?
My job as a recruiter was to find the BEST candidate for my client. Because otherwise why’s the client paying the fees? And the BEST candidate was someone 100% ready for the role. Even if it meant head hunting someone - that’s what was done.
But the BEST 100% ready right now candidate, may not be THE best individual in the long term. And given that a recruiter had to be responsible for 3-6 months of the person starting work, what was the incentive to look for someone who'd last longer?
Like in Chinese Whispers the recruiter can only obtain that much from the hiring manager to understand EVERYTHING needed to make that candidate successful. So things like culture fit, resilience to get through an early start up culture, patience to deal with micro management / bureaucracy, initiative & patience needed where processes were not formed, where multi-tasking was necessary.
And 100% ready right now candidates, the 1 percentages - could get jobs themselves. What about the remaining 99%?
That’s where eliminating the middle person in the hiring process came about.
Allowing an SMS chat system through which employers see initial work profiles via an alias, then suss'ing out those out relevant to their organisation. And then being introduced to each other via a small jobs board fee paid by the employer. With the same applying for jobseekers able to do this too - sussing out organisations which don't align with their long term career aspirations.
That's where electricianXchange comes in.
DIRECT DIALOGUE - IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK - NO BULL SHIT - NO INTERMEDIARIES - ENOUGH DEMAND VIA JOBS & ENOUGH SUPPLY VIA JOBSEEKERS COMING TOGETHER TO CREATE AN EFFICIENT WORK RELATED MARKET PLACE.
That's my "why". Have you found your "why" in life?
